Thinking about the comic a bit more though.... if you're already at a costume party and they comment on the boots instead of the ears.... well.... duh they don't think the ears are out of place. It's a COSTUME party. Therefore, if they like the boots (come on, who doesn't like nifty boots?) that's what they're going to comment on.
Sometime you should try what I intend to do if I ever get that fursuit: wander the streets on some normal day, far from Halloween, and see how people react.
Incidentally, only about 50% of the time when I wear bizarre clothing (pirate garb being the main one) do people pay attention around here. lol
