Can't say I've ever dressed as my true form. It's a little hard, given I'd have to probably shell out around a couple thousand bucks for a realistic, fully operational fursuit to my exact specifications, cooling fans, animatronics, and all, to be satisfied. lol
The only "past life me" I have ever dressed as would be a pirate. :P (Don't ask me what being a pirate was like - all I remember was how I died...)
Hah, I could dress as one of my two remembered human past lives - Middle Ages Generic (male) Peasant, or Little Girl In White Nightgown With Bloody Kitchen Knife. The second one would actually be a pretty good Halloween costume. ;)
the current sorry state of myoelectric polymers (myomers, for the Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, and Mechwarrior fans) mean that there would be no practical way to articulate such a beast (especially facial muscles!) to my satisfaction.
OTOH, if anyone has the image "Armor2.jpg" by Kaijima kicking around, I could still do something cool for a bit less...
I think it says something for the observedness of the average human being. You'd think they'd notice a male wearing a sarong, for instance...*wry grin*
People will see what the want or expect to see...not necessarily what's there. This can be lifesaving, sometimes. Face saving at others. Better not to be noticed than to become a "What's that?"
A second thought...perhaps the "not noticing" is because they've already seen them, as "phantom images" out of the corner of their eye. Perhaps they are afraid to grant them reality, because they see them in their spirit eyes, and fear to bring them into reality, because they don't want to admit that the fantastic, the sense of wonder, is as strong now as it was ten thousand years ago; only today it is shunned as not being "scientific" or "rational"...but our ancestors must have known what they were doing, since we're here, aren't we?
That's a very interesting idea... so you're saying that people often do see these things, but they avoid admitting/mentioning it because they're afraid it will sound weird? For example, the unease a boy has inquiring about the snow-storm in the short story "Snowed" by Carol Lay.
When we were learning about this world, as tiny children, we saw many things that weren't there, according to our parents. MommieGod and DaddyGod shaped our universe by what they decreed was and wasn't. This universe is made of Stimuli, which we percieve as sight, sound, touch...literally everything. We are our universe, in a sense. We feel things differently, each from the other of us, depending on what we have decided that this or that particular feeling means. Agony to one is Ecstasy to another. Sorrow to one is Rejoicing to someone else: it depends on what we have decreed to be. People see many things that they don't respond to simply because they have decided not to. Perhaps you'll see me padding down the street as a wolf rather than a human...but you will insist the I'm human, and thus will "see" me as such...until you decide that wolf=human=being called DuneShadow...then you'll see both of me. ANd I'll see you as a human called Waywind, until you permit me to see the griffin or the elf or whatever you feel you really are. A stranger asks: What are you...what would be your reflex response? I'm being serious here...until you can say what YOU ARE, as well as WHO, just like everyone else, you won't be seeing things that are there, and seeing things that aren't. It's no different with me. It's a struggle to force myself to BE the wolf I am...but when I am successful, I do notice that children, animals, and even some people respond to the Wolf walking beside them, not the human. Wouldn't it be funny if our Humanity were but a dream that we, in our real forms, were indulging in? Perhaps that is what death is: we wake up as ourselves...and nobody can see us anymore, until they wake up themselves. Lady's Peace be with you....
It might also be worth considering that for some, the special features are simply recognized, but the polite comment, accepts you as you are and is simply a kindness of a generic and routine nature.
Much as in the way we don't tend to dwell on the features and anomalies of the handicapped but simply make polite and kind conversation.
Thinking about the comic a bit more though.... if you're already at a costume party and they comment on the boots instead of the ears.... well.... duh they don't think the ears are out of place. It's a COSTUME party. Therefore, if they like the boots (come on, who doesn't like nifty boots?) that's what they're going to comment on.
Sometime you should try what I intend to do if I ever get that fursuit: wander the streets on some normal day, far from Halloween, and see how people react.
Incidentally, only about 50% of the time when I wear bizarre clothing (pirate garb being the main one) do people pay attention around here. lol
For seconders, how would you keep it from just dragging on the floor?
Imagine if someone came to you and said, "I wouldn't know how to draw a dragon face", and your "Why not" was met with "I don't know how to draw anything and have it look good". Now keep in mind that I know what my problems with drawing are, and in fact I've made some improvements since the "complete nothing" point.
Doesn't mean I can draw a dragon face, but at least it doesn't look like ... ok, it does look like a face, how's that?
You could send vibes my way that say, "For Pete's sake, Waywind, the final exams are over, you can start having a life again!"
Sorry about the huge delay, guys. Don't worry, the comic isn't over. I'll be gathering my notes together and making new episodes pretty soon. I'm glad to hear that the updates are so eagerly awaited. :)
There comes a time When the school begins to end And the 'folk come out and can play There are humans watching Oh but the rest are waiting too And the comics just must be drawn

Poetry ...
When the school begins to end
And the 'folk come out and can play
There are humans watching
Oh but the rest are waiting too
And the comics just must be drawn
We are the 'folk
Who read the comics
We are the ones who make a big ol fuss
So keep us from hicks (sorry, I can't make a better rhyne here)

Re: Poetry ...
How we wonder what's the tune
Where oh where could this next be
Wand'rin round Orion's knee
This ol' poem no sense doth make
For no comic makes us ache.
