*meh* I wish I had more access to free-range meat. If nothing else, it tastes better. ESPECIALLY free range chicken. The stuff I get right now has gotten to tasting so nasty, I think I may have to swear it off for a while. x.x

In the meantime I have to stick with whatever I can find, since if I crave red meat and go without it for too long, I start wanting to kill and eat the humans around me. *cough* Got a little temper problem attached to that. Saving the venison my grandparents sent for an emergency right now...

I'd love to be able to hunt, but have no skills in that area in the present life. Only the boys in the family got taken out deer hunting by grandpa. My boyfriend has done some bowhunting. Maybe he could take me sometime (after honing my archery skills, of course). Granted it doesn't quite fulfill the need for running the animal down and taking it with my own teeth, but I have to make allowances for the present anatomy.

Incidentally, does anybody know of a safe way to eat raw red meat? I find myself craving it when I get a good fresh cut, but I've never tried it for fear of getting sick. The brighter red it is, the more I start drooling.

Hm.

Make sure it's fresh; that's all that is really needed, from what I understand. I think there's some sort of asian food... I don't know what it's called... it's basically thinly sliced cuts of raw steak. Very very good stuff. If I can remember or find out the name of the dish, I'll post it; you could probably find out more by looking along those lines.

The dish's called Yukhoe, it's Korean. Basically raw shredded beef with ginger and other seasonings. It's good. :) Worth trying if you like it rare. :)

Wow, I have *got* to try that!

I haven't had a Korean style of beef that I didn't like, I don't think raw would bother me too much, and...I love ginger. In just about any form save, y'know, raw.

Or Japaneese and get some raw fish down my gullet instead.

Also make sure that it's not from a source where mad cow disease has shown up. I refuse to trust US. beef because of it. :P

Cooking does not destroy the disease-causing prion.

The solution to this is easy: learn how to make steak tartar. It's literally raw meat that has certain seasonings and such on it that kills anything on it. Or barring that you could just forgo the eating of *totally* raw meat and just lightly sear the outer few millimeters. The most dangerous things on steak live on the very surface, which is why you can't easily get a rare burger at a resteraunt anymore but you can get steak that's barely cooked at all.
Or you could do like we do here sometimes and just have small amounts on rare occasions. The only real reaon the appendix in humans is so atrophied in adulthood is that we never feed our kids raw meat while young, so it never gets any exercise. Give it a light workout every now and then, and as long as you're sure the meat is clean (free of disease or parasites) you'll be fine.
